Chicago is full of angel and venture capital but many investors are weary of investing in fashion brands because of the nature of trends- they don't last. Fashionista.com wrote about 10 investors today who have been known to invest in early stage fashion companies. Those investors and Fashionista's insights are written below:

1. Andrew Rosen: The Theory founder and CEO is also an investor in Alice & Olivia, Rag & Bone, and Helmut Lang. He invests publicly and privately in brands.

2. Marvin Traub, Marvin Traub Associates
While Traub, best known for his years at Bloomingdale's, mostly consults for big companies, he is also a partial investor in brands like Rachel Roy and Matthew Williamson. (Sources say that at this moment, Traub is not looking to invest in more labels. But who knows what 2011 will bring.)

3. Sage LLC: This Los Angeles-based private equity firm invests in small to mid-market labels. (Since this is L.A., that means lots of denim.) These are the people you reach out to when you've built a successful business and want to take it a step further.

4. Caroline Brown and Chris Burch, J Christopher Capital: This private equity firm is currently invested in Tory Burch, as well as non-fashion brands like Jawbone.

5. Ramez Toubassy, Brand Sense Partners: This firm mostly does brand consulting for big corporations, but it recently invested in a few fashion and lifestyle companies, including label Canvas and Tribe.

6. Serge Azria: Azria backs trouser label Joie; more recently he has invested in the relaunched Equipment (shown on Carine, left), as well as Current Elliott.

7. Jeffrey Aronsson, Aronsson Group: In the past, former Donna Karan CEO Aronsson has invested in Ginny H.—Ginny Hilfiger's collection. (She's the sister of Tommy Hilfiger.) He also partnered with Traub to invest in Matthew Williamson and Rachel Roy.

8. Seventh Capital: This New York-based investment firm's main focus is small and mid-sized companies. The interest is in e-commerce, so if you're not a designer but have an idea for an online retailer, or if you sell your goods primarily on the web, it might be worth looking into.

9. Permira: This London-based private equity firm picked up the Valentino Fashion Group a few years ago, along with Proenza Schouler, but have had difficulty selling off both.

10. Bartel Family: This European family made its fortune off of a travel website, but now it's making loftier investments. First up? Lanvin and Devi Kroell. Who's next? Who knows….

So what do you say Chicago fashion designers, are you picking up the phone to call an investor?

Government Sponsored Fashion Programming

Mayor Daley took on fashion as an initiative close to his heart over 5 years ago. The initiative was created to keep local design talent in the city, supporting the local economy, creative jobs and ultimately tax revenue. From this sprung the Mayor's Fashion Council, Fashion Focus and the Chicago Fashion Incubator. The city fiscally supports local designers through most of these programs and many designers attribute their success to this support.

Fashionista.com reports today on some of the other fashion communities and how their respective governments support sustainable fashion communities. NYC for example has an over $200,000 budget for the CFDA's Fashion Incubator. The City of London awarded the British Fashion Council a £4.2 million (about $5.2 million), 4 year grant in 2007.

With the way the economy has been acting for the past 2 years, government support has become one of the few ways that initiatives like this can be financially supported. It will be interesting to see if corporate support for these programs picks up as corporations begin to loosen their belts.

Stitches Fashion Newsletter: June 2010

Click on the image for more detail. Coming out of Harvard business school, Vivian Weng, the creator of Fashion Stake, is addressing the crucial issue all of our young designers face: cash flow.

"Interestingly, case studies have indicated shoppers value having personal experiences with designers more than getting discounts," Weng said. In return of their support, "'Supporters' will be given credits to put toward clothing purchases, as well as special offers like exclusive previews, showroom visits and fashion show invitations. Supporters will also vote for the styles they would like to see produced."

The site will start slow, with just five designers with future plans to add more. It seems there will be a screening/selection process for those designers chosen for the site. Ideas such as Fashion Stake are putting a new spin on the seemingly depressed fashion industry, allowing designers to truly be supported by their fans and tackle the cash flow mountain.

Chicago Company, Noon Solar, Launches America's First Natural-Dye Production House

<img src='/upload/PHO_183_lg.jpg' alt='Frei Designs dress dyed by Noon Design Studio. This New York Fashion week, brands such as Alexander Wang and Rodarte will stream their shows live. As soon as the shows are over, the internet will be sprinkled with pictures of the designers Fall/Winter 2010 collection.

But does it really make sense to share your future collection this early with the every day consumer? Are we cheapening our current collections in hopes of creating excitement for our future collections? Many times, designers have yet to ship their Spring/Summer while their Fall/Winter is being plastered all over the web. With the current economy, consumer demands are changing. We expect the sale. We crave the sale. And buying something full price is no longer an option for many. It seems we have caught the fashion industry into an unending spin cycle. Is fashion week for the trade or for the shopper?

Cynthia Rowley is taking a fresh approach this fashion week, creating a pop-up shop of Fall/Winter 2010 pieces, available for the next month. Donna Karan says we are "killing our own industry" and suggests we move the calendar back, showing Fall/Winter in April or May instead of February, adjusting for customer demands and clarifying consumer confusion.

It's clear the industry needs an emergency break. What do you think that change should be? Etsy, if you aren't familiar is an Ebay of sorts for the craft and vintage hobbyist. It is an amazing site with an ever-growing group of sellers. The Times spoke with one designer who took her hobby a little bit more seriously one day, quit her day job and began a business- all because of a huge fan base on Etsy. An interesting new complexity in the entrepreneurial world.

Lee Allison Holiday Sale

Over at Lee Allison, they are cleaning up and popping some bottles for their Annual Holiday Sale!

They've got ties, bowties, shirts, custom shirts, silk knot cufflinks, a full range of boy's ties, an assortment of scarves for women, irregular ties on clearance, and more! So many up-and-coming as well as established fashion brands have integrated social media into their marketing campaigns- so much so that Dolce and Gabbana replaced editors with bloggers such as Scott Schuman(The Sartorialist) and Garance Dore(Garance Dore)in their Spring 2010 front rows. "There is a real ‘bandwagon effect' going on," says Uché Okonkwo, founder and executive director of Luxe Corp., a Paris-based consulting group. "People are getting really excited about social media without really asking themselves if there is any reason to really get excited." The article goes on to say, "The rise of social networks echoes the introduction of e-commerce more than a decade ago — when many top brands felt pressured to jump in before they even had a strategy."

Due to the accessibility of social media and its presence in our personal lives, it seems to connect that we would branch these mediums into our businesses. But, are we undertaking something we truly do not understand?

Fashion Focus Chicago Presents Menswear Cafe

Alright boys, it is finally your turn. Trovata took Forever 21 to court over multiple garments sold in 2007. Forever 21 sold multiple pieces with an eerie similarity to Trovata garments(see picture for comparison. Picture courtesy of Fashionista). The case was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. This seems slightly encouraging that Trovata was able to receive damages for the copied goods. A positive step for fashion designers and the protection of their creations. Perhaps next time, a court ruling might set a precedent showing a shift in the opinion of the courts from function to art in terms of fashion design.

Anna Hovet Preview Party

Anna Hovet, designer in Residence at the Chicago Fashion Incubator, will be previewing her collection this Saturday, October 10, at Vain. They will be featuring Lara Miller's fall collection during their Make A Fashion Statement event. Make a Fashion Statement is all about your clothes telling a story about you and your impact on the world. Statements such as, "Do the clothes you wear, wear out the world?" "Be green in any color you like" and "Good karma is in" evoke that connection. The party will be bittersweet as we say goodbye to the Pivot storefront at the end of this month. Pivot has shown Chicago how rad eco-fashion is for the past few years. Don't fret too much though! Pivotboutique.com will still be up and kicking, supporting eco-fashion world wide. So stop by tomorrow, shop the Lara Miller collection and make a fashion statement.

1101 W Fulton Market
Wednesday, October 7, 6-9pm

PINK Fall Empowerment Conference- OCT. 13TH

Sign Up Now for the PINK'S 5TH ANNUAL FALL EMPOWERMENT SERIES!
OCTOBER 13, 2009, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Connect with and learn from America's most influential women in business at PINK's half-day education and leadership conference.

MEET THE INFLUENCERS:
Susan Sobbott, President, American Express OPEN
Donnalee DeMaio, President, MetLife Bank
Lisa Caputo, EVP, Global Marketing and Corporate

Many of us are guilty of surrounding ourselves with friends and family during a new venture which can sometimes backfire when the person does not fulfill the responsibilities you expected them to. This article is a must read for anyone having to make their first "fire." One great piece of advice was, "As traumatic as it is, it is kindest to be direct, don't waffle, say it right away, don't ease into it, don't lie and keep it short. In the case of a contractor, simply state your expectations were not met (this is not the time to explain what those were). It's tempting to say the numbers aren't working out but when they find you've hired someone else (and they will), they may trash talk and say you're cheap or on the skids. If it truly is a matter of money, you feel bad but not guilty and wouldn't even be debating this internally."

To read more of this story or other great fashion business advice, visit www.fashion-incubator.com

Stitches Fashion Newsletter: October 2009

Our October newsletter is all about Fashion Focus Chicago and the fabulous events planned! Many fashion business owners, designers and boutique owners alike, turn to credit for the start-up and survival of their company. As credit turns to a crutch, it seems that not just the interest is having a compounding effect. But what are better alternatives for this slow cash flow industry? Seeking assistance early on from organizations like SCORE, the Women's Business Development Center and the Stitches Fashion Program might be the answer to this crunch.

The Shorty Collaborative and Gen Art Chicago to Host Shorty Clothing E-Boutique Launch

The Shorty Collaborative and Gen Art Chicago are pleased to debut Shorty Clothing's whimsical, yet edgy, 2009 Rock and Roll Meets Rococo collection with a Shorty Clothing e-commerce boutique launch event at Lumen (839 West Fulton Market St.) this Thursday night. Check out TransFS

If your business accepts credit cards or if you are looking to accept credit cards for the first time, TransFS will help your business keep more of your money, in less time than you ever thought possible. They are a comparison shopping system that helps you find credit card processors that charge lower merchant fees and provide better service. They typically save businesses about 40% on their credit card processing expenses, quickly and at no cost to the merchant. Really.

Traditionally, it's been difficult or impossible to compare credit card processors on an "apples to apples" basis. So even if you think your merchant fees are too high or you're getting poor service, the time and pain of shopping for a replacement make you reluctant to change. We also see many merchants who have been led to believe they are already getting the best deal -- but find that the truth is quite different.

TransFS has overcome these obstacles, by developing a network of processors who bid for your business, and you're connected with one of these processors only when you choose. Each processor is carefully certified, and TransFS serves as your advocate throughout the process.

It takes only a few minutes to complete a secure application. Here's how it works:
1) Submit a secure application
2) Pre-screened processors bid for your business
3) View your bids and select a processor if you choose
4) Close the deal and begin keeping more of your money!

To find out more, visit www.transfs.com

This blog is written by Nicole Reyhle, a Chicago native and Professor at Columbia College. After graduating with a degree in Retail Business Management from Columbia College, Reyhle worked as a buyer at Sears. After that, she then worked on the wholesale side of companies like Franco Sarto and Via Spiga and worked with retailers including Macy's, Nordstrom's, and Dillard's. She also had press responsibilities, communicating with Vogue, O Magazine, Lucky, and more.

Basically, Nicole saw the fashion industry from almost every angle and is now here to spread the wealth. She writes daily articles with tips and tricks on the industry.

Her article today talks about questions to ask a sales rep, something we at Stitches are asked about daily. She's listed out 20 insightful questions to help you determine who is the best rep for you. Some of our favorites include:

Are there references from other vendors currently working with this rep that he or she is willing to share with you? There should be!

Why is this rep able to pick up a new line? Did they just lose a line or are they looking for more diversification? The details matter here. You don't want to get lost in a crowd.

How often do you expect to hear from the rep? Some reps don't touchbase at all unless an order is placed. Make sure your expectations are agreed upon.

To read more of Nicole's tips or to register for her daily emails, visit www.retailminded.com

Quote of the Day

From WWD: "If we sold 10 of something in the old days, we would make 12 and count on reorders. The line has been designed for the fashion forward pear shaped woman- small waist, full hips. Centered around well tailored pants and skirts and sprinkled with stunning wraps, this line is all about flattering a woman's figure. Kathryn McKechnie, founder of the line, got tired of unflattering shapes and her struggle to find well fitting clothes- especially bottoms. She quickly realized she was not alone in this ill-fitting clothes world and created Crescendo to celebrate the curvy bod.

The Launch party was definitely a night to remember, with an installation of rotating models, delicious treats and a cool room. The collection is full of pieces that can take you from work to drinks and keep you distinct from the standard 9-5 apparel. The Catherine Hepburn style, pleated front Pixie Pants are definitely stylish yet classic pants that will last you seasons. The event left all excited to see what's next with this new line. It went on to spell out a seemingly obvious problem with this growing retail vertical. "The biggest challenge seems to be finding enough merchandise. 'There's a real fight right now for product,' says John Tomich (of One Stop, who recently acquired Billion Dollar Babes)" It goes on to quote, "A lot of designers have cut back on production" said Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, co-founder of Gilt Group. This big swing in the economy has turned the industry on its head. While the fashionable crave new styles, many are on tighter budgets and these private sales seem to be their best solution for their big name designer appetites. These sites may also be a good solution for designers sitting on huge inventories. Just an interesting development.

Beta Boutique's Semi-Annual Stacked Racks Event This Weekend!

After six long months of waiting, the Beta girls are ready once again to show off their stacked racks and will be filling a brand new off-site space in Lincoln Park for 2 days only with rack after marvelous rack of summer & fall's best designer stock and samples as well as the best boutique overstock selling at 40-90% off retail prices. The New Venture Award goes to a promising new business, product or service.

FIVE is a socially conscious company who features handbags and accessories sourced through fair trade practices in FIVE countries. Their mission is to help generate income for individuals in developing areas, donate a substantial portion of the revenues to worthy causes in those areas, and to foster the use of sustainable materials in fashion. In April 2009, they launched an accessory line titled 'Off The Street', which is sourced and produced by vendors of StreetWise, a Chicago based social enterprise designed to help elevate severely impoverished men and women out of poverty. By employing individuals that have formerly been homeless and using littered material "off the streets" of Chicago, they offer a unique eco-friendly accessory line consisting of bracelets, buttons, belts, pins and picture frames constructed and adorned with items such as transit cards, bottle caps, ticket stubs from sporting events and other urban refuse. 15% of gross income from this line will be donated back to StreetWise.

Congratulations to Christine!! This company is taking an initiative to help emerging designers in their ever quest to find cheap rent in high foot traffic neighborhoods. They are implementing a "pop-up-shop" of sorts outside London's City Hall. Their KiosKiosK temporary building will be open every day from July 2 until September 2. The program is supported by the Mayor of London and the London Sustainable Development Commission's London Leaders Program. These pop-up-shops are just a test run and if successful this program will be rolled out nation wide. Cheers, London! A fantastic idea on how to support emerging designers!

From Style and Beyond - Breaking Into The Fashion Business Panel Discussion

Join industry experts in the fields of Fashion Design, Marketing and Operations next Thursday for a panel discussion of what it takes to be successful in the fashion industry in Chicago.

Speakers include Chicago entrepreneurs:
- Sandy Rueve, Founder, SheBeads
- Jenny Dombroski, President, Evolve Intimates
- Lee Allison, Founder, The Lee Allison Company
Moderator: Lara Miller, Chief Executive, Macy's Chicago Fashion Incubator

Date: June 4, 2009
Time: 6-9pm
Location: Eugenie Terrace, 1730 N. While in Spain, she dabbled in design and finally stumbled into design school. Design school in Spain? Not a bad way to go! "I learned the history of fashion and about great Spanish designers like Balenciaga. We learned serious techniques and so much of that has influenced my line today," Lesley tells me as we drink root beer in her new Pilsen studio. She has a HUGE space that she has split into different sections. The sewing room is a big, curtained off portion while the front is split into office and show room. The cool old space melds well with the vintage Squasht vibe and the fun mannequin heads wearing Squasht signature headbands add an extra punch of whimsy. The Squasht line has vintage shapes with fun, new twists creating the modern vintage shoppers dream.

A Stitches Q&A with Lesley

S: What were the first steps in starting your company?
L: I didn't even mean to. I always wore my hats and friends would ask me to make them for them. I soon realized I could make money off of this and slowly Squasht by Les happened.

S:What inspires you?
L: Vintage clothing! I love vintage silhouettes and great accessories. That's why I use as many vintage fabrics as I can.

S:What's your favorite part about being an entrepreneur?
L:Being my own boss, making my own schedule. I really love coming to work.

Shop Squasht by Les at Wolfbait and B-Girls, Habit and Florodora. Don't miss this Friday's Florodora Squasht Trunk Sale from 12-6. Congrats, Abigail!

"Glaum-Lathbury still gets obsessed by odd things: one collection was all about the shape of an insect's body, which, butterfly-like, underwent a wonderful metamorphosis on the way from her mind to the hanger. But she never lets her concept get in the way of her execution. Characterized by painstakingly tailored yet romantic flourishes like folds, pintucks, and pleats, her work showcases her sharp sense of the properties of different fabrics as well as an awareness of what flatters the body. Her clothes are vintagey yet futuristic, both pretty and thought provoking—truly the best of all worlds."

Anna Hovet was chosen as the reader's Choice so congrats to Anna too!

Anna Hovet Lauch Party

Check out a new designer on the scene, Anna Hovet. Jessa Brinkmeyer, the owner of Pivot, received this recognition along with five other local individuals hoping to make the world a better place. The article notes, "Since opening Pivot, Brinkmeyer has had to counteract eco-fashion's ugly stereotype. "People have images of hemp sacks, and clothes you can smoke," she says. And indeed, there are no hemp sacks in her boutique at 1101 West Fulton Market. Instead, hanging from her racks are funky tops from Stewart + Brown, slimming denim from Good Society, and a covetable black dress from the Chicago designer Lara Miller."Congratulations, Jessa!

Brands such as Joe's Jeans and Coach might be marking down their fall prices up to 30% to maintain the quality of their brand without diluting it with bargain basement sales. According to Mounir Moufarrige, CEO and president of Emanual Ungaro, "Prices have spiraled in the luxury market in the last several years due to aggressive consumption," he says. "Merchandise became too expensive, and we need to bring things down to reasonably expensive now that we no longer have this demand." I guess only time will tell what does this do to small scale wholesalers and retailers who have to keep up.

Retail Business Exchange

Women's Business Development Center
Incorporate--so you protect yourself from lawsuits!
Get insurace, to protect yourself from lawsuits!
Get contracts, to protect yourself from lawsuits!
Problems with a vendor? ex-employee? competitor? File a Lawsuit!

In an ever litigious business climate, its important for business owners to understand what's involved in the litigation process.

March's seminar at Saper Law de-bunks the mystery behind litigation and teaches business owners the lingo and procedures they need in order to tackle disputes.

Among the questions answered will be:
What is a litigator, vs a transactional lawyer? Can a lawyer be both?
What exactly happens in a lawsuit? What is the timeline, procedure?
What is the role of a lawyer, judge, and jury in a lawsuit?
What are jurisdiction issues?
Does litigation always have to be an expensive endevour?
When can a lawuit be used strategically to achieve a favorable settlement?
Other questions are welcome.

A new generation came up through that period. I'm not sure whether it encourages creativity, whether it's because people are looking for alternatives to what's fed to them on a mass scale, whether they are more interested in what's happening on the underground, or what it is, but you do get new names, new businesses, during recessions. If you like cocktails, fashion and Copenhagen - here's a fun project.

There's a cherry flavored liqueur called Heering and they've come up with six different cocktails: Classic, Romantic, Exotic, Vintage, Dramatic and Rock'n'Roll (the actual recipes are listed on their site).

Whoever makes the best cocktail dress inspired by one of the above drinks gets their own runway show during Copenhagen Fashion Week in the Fall of 2009 - so you'll show your Spring 2010 collection.

To qualify, you must either be in your last year of school or a new designer, as in, you've been designing for one to three years. You must submit a technical drawing, a description of the dress and a description of the fabric along with a current resume. If your design is chosen, you'll be given the money to produce the dress and it will compete on a runway in Singapore at the start of the summer with dresses from fifteen other countries.

The article probes, "So what is Chicago style beyond big coats, warm boots and long, flat vowels? Does it even exist?"

The article goes on to quote, "Chicago is not a fashion wasteland as people have come to regard the Midwest. It is very fashion conscious," Byrd-Blaylock says firmly. "They follow the fashion rules more closely. They ask themselves, 'How do we put that together in a way that is sophisticated and not too whimsical?' In New York and L.A. they're more focused on personal style and quirkiness."

Addressing local designers, "Trying to set up a design business outside New York or Los Angeles adds an additional hurdle to an already tough business. But designers here have found both a method and a customer base. Melissa Serpico, for example, found an affordable location on a spotty stretch of North Ashland Street in Wicker Park. In Chicago, she says, 'You either have to start your own business or go elsewhere.'"

Whether you agree with the article or not, Chicago does have its own fashion vibe and it is thriving. One important point addressed, is that we are not trying to be New York. We are Chicago. "All politics might be local, but in Chicago, fashion is, too."

Serpico Winter Clearance Cocktail Party

Join Serpico for their winter clearance shopping event!

She explored innovation and tested the water on how to design apparel. She took innovation to school when she attended the International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT). While attending IADT, she was selected as one of the 13 citywide finalists to participate in the Fashion Group International (FGI) scholarship program.

Inspired by sustainability and texture, Tiffany Hardaway created her line Phizza'z Design in 2006. Since then, she was selected as one of AIBI's Chicago is Red..HOT! emerging designers of 2008.

Versatile pieces are pretty incredible, especially during tough economic times. Tiffany has figured this out and created pieces like her 3-way tunic that can be worn, well..3-ways.

Phizza'z Designs can be found at Andersonville Galleria on Clark and Foster and they will be launching their Spring 09' line at www.studio-808.com, this month.

Sister site to Seattle Picks, Phoenix Picks and various others, this is how it works: the ladies pick out designers, boutiques and events they know the well-dressed of Chicago will be interested in. There are Chicago Picks for new things going on in the city, Chick Picks for us women who want to know about cool new threads and Hip Happenings, giving us the 411 on what is going on around the city that week. Each issue comes out on Friday. Our friends over at Chicago Picks really seem to have their nose to the runway filtering through Chicago fashion to find you the best of the best, until the next week when they find something even better.

Chic Gems Loves Style Expose Readers!

Deals, deals, deals! This former professional dancer has now become inspired by that motion. Dancing began to put wear and tear on German's body and she decided to quit dancing and started to create costumes for her fellow dancers. "Momentum and the human body are so interesting to me. As a dancer, you had to pay attention to these things so it is just natural for me to be inspired by them" German stated. Born in Russia, German moved to America in 1989 and soon after moved to Pisa, Italy to study fashion design.

Her structured line, the Yana Collection, is based around the idea of the business woman who likes to have fun after 5pm. Made in Chicago, tailored jackets and pants are the staples of the line, accented with lace and feminine details. The fabrics used in German's collections do not wrinkle and naturally adjust to your body creating breathability and comfort. "I believe that every woman should have a great pair of pants, a classic pair with great pleating. These will set up your look and get you ready for the day."

German has been completely motivated by the Incubator experience. "Simply coming to work at Macy's every day has been emotional. So many other people could have been in my position and it's amazing that I am here. The fact that I can just go downstairs and talk with the buyers is awesome. There is so much space and so many opportunities that we are given and after that everything is up to us to make our business successful."

As a part of Chicago Fashion Focus, the Yana Collection appeared in Red Hot Chicago and the Chicago Sister Cities shows. Her collection can be found at the 28 Shop at Macy's as a part of the Chicago Designer series. Her pieces range from $135-$320

Tribeca Boutique Charity Coat Swap

Charity Coat Swap/Fall Mark- Downs

Maybe you should take a page from Julie Schwanbeck and change direction. Well figure out what you love, make sure you are good at it, and then go for it. Schwanbeck, formerly in advertising and sales, started dabbling with jewelry after 12 years in business. Schwanbeck took a class in jewelry design and never looked back. She even applied for Macy's Distinction in Design competition and won. After this and great success at a trunk show, Julie realized jewelry design was exactly where she wanted to be.

Jules uses hard metals and interesting composition to create one of a kind statement jewelry. Made in Chicago, the Jules line is a reflection of the city with his architectural details and organic embelishments. You can find Jules cool line at Honey She She in Bucktown, the Gray Boutiques in Old Town and Winnetka or online at Second City Style.
A few questions and answers for Julie Schwanbeck of Jules:

SE: What inspires you?
JS: I am inspired by living in the city, walking the streets and seeing different fashion expressions, the architecture, wonders of nature and definitely art. My boyfriend is an artist and designer, so he inspires me and motivates me to continually create and express myself.

SE: What is your Spring collection like?
JS: For me spring is all about mixed metals and brightly colored precious gemstones. As a metalsmith, I love the blemishes my hammer makes, and the colors a torch can create on metal. I love playing with textures and colors to create unique and unexpected designs.

SE: What is your favorite part about the job?
JS: Being able to live as an artist and have a career doing what I truly love every single day. What's that saying? Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life. It's true. 100%.

SE: What is your least favorite part about the job?
JS: The books! I leave that to my operations manager/boyfriend/business partner. He is also helping me launch a men's line in 2009.
